ROSACEA – WHAT CAN HELP

Rosacea is a common skin condition that can vary from a simple tendency to flush or blush to severe disfiguration. Women are more affected than men (3:1) and fair-skinned people are more prone to Rosacea than those with dark skin. However, Rosacea tends to run a milder course in women, with men developing more disfiguring aspects.

Characterized by redness of the face, particularly on the nose and cheeks, there can be a variation from mild coloration to dark red Acne-type eruptions and dilated blood vessels. One of the more disfiguring aspects of Rosacea is rhinophyma a red bulbous nose..

The cause of Rosacea is unknown, although the condition can arise suddenly after an environmenal or chemical impact. It can also develop slowly over a period of many years. Common to all cases of Rosacea is that solar irradiation makes it flare and makes it more difficult to treat.

Other environmental factors such as heat, humidity, cold and dryness may irritate the skin, as may fragrances, detergents, and many skin care product ingredients. Some patients are also affected by certain foods, such as hot liquids, spices and alcoholic beverages. Emotional reactions can also stimulate flushing.

Treatment:

It is important to remove as many chemical and environmental irritants as possible. (See Lori's Tips below.) Only mild skin care products should be used. Always protect against sunlight with a strong sunblock.

Topical as well as prescription antibiotics are sometimes effective.

LORI'S TIPS
A monthly feature from Lori Van Wormer

Protect your skin from a hostile environment

There are elements in your environment both outside and inside of your home that can trigger uncomfortable skin-related reactions. As a matter of fact, almost 90% of the general population has, at one time, had one of these reactions. Rosacea is often triggered by environmental irritants.

Environmentally sensitive skin is caused by a complex interaction of factors that can include nutrition, stress, genetic predisposition, exposure to toxins, sun exposure, dehydration, fragrances, harsh cosmetic ingredients and other irritants. Often, the causes are multiple and difficult to isolate.

The best thing you can do for your skin to avoid sensitive-skin reactions is to create a protective shield against environmental assault and to fortify your body's natural defensive barrier.

Dermalogica, one of the well-known manufacturers of skin care products we carry, has created the Environmental Control System that protects and fortifies. The system provides both emergency help for sensitized skin as well as ongoing protection.

The products by Dermalogica we recommend include:
