IS HYALURONIC ACID AN ANTI-AGING MIRACLE? By Mark Van Wormer, MD, ABAAM In Yuzuri Hara, a village in Japan, ten percent of the population is 85 or older. Diseases of aging, such as cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer's, are virtually unknown. People rarely see a doctor and their skin rarely shows signs of aging. They live long, healthy active lives. As reported on the ABC News program 20/20, researchers have discovered the "magical" ingredient that appears to keep people in Yuzuri Hara young. It is hyaluronic acid, which is found naturally in the carbohydrate foods that are unique to the hilly terrain of this village. Hyaluronic Acid (or HA) is found in all human connective tissue, and it lubricates the joints. HA also helps to keep skin smooth and "plump." HA is one of the substances that decreases with age. A lot of research is being done to find out if taking HA orally will decrease the effects of aging. The FDA has approved the use of for injection into knee joints to "relubricate" the joint, but it really does more than that. Hyaluronic acid decreases heat and inflammation and actually slows arthritic development, and, best of all, it stops chronic arthritic pain. In Europe, HA is used as a soft tissue filler, for lip augmentation, Acne scar revision, and treatment of lines and wrinkles. It is injected into the skin much like collagen with similar lasting results. | |||||||||||||
| Hyaluronic Acid in skin care Products In recent years, pioneering skin care companies, such as GreatSkin, have begun using hyaluronic acid in their products. The loss of skin elasticity that comes with aging, with the resulting lines and wrinkles, is often the result of decreasing HA levels. We have found that hyaluronic acid is a fabulous topical hydrating agent and a potent anti-inflammatory. It stops itching and burning, is very soothing and, best of all, results in softer smoother skin. In creams and gels, it can be used to hydrate the skin, prevent razor burn, and treat dry, itching irritated skin. This unique ingredient is a must for any skin care program. We have included it in a number of products, that you will find reasonably priced, especially when you consider the amount of HA in each of these products. Recommended

TIPS The thing that is really nice about Squalane is that it is a great moisturizer that adds real suppleness to your skin, but it never feels greasy. Actually, Squalane is the main ingredient in sebum, which is your skin's natural oil. So as skin dries out with aging, this is the best ingredient to use as a moisturizer. (It's also found in olive oil -- but that's too oily to use on your skin.) Used internally,
Squalane can help build your immune system and it also works as an anti-inflammatory.
