Creating
the internal balance that retards the aging process touches many areas
that include:
When you have internal balance, you will feel better physically and emotionally, which will give you the strength to deal with life effectively and avoid ill health, depression, obesity, and many other physical problems. This internal balance also creates a cellular environment that supports life. The effect is to reduce many of the biochemical reactions that contribute to the aging process. For you, this means more energy, smoother skin and a more youthful appearance, and prevention of chronic and degenerative diseases. Creating this internal balance may mean making some real lifestyle changes for you. We understand that this may take some time and effort. But, if you understand the benefits and set your mind to making the necessary changes, you will and the rewards for you will be enormous. Nutrition
and Nutraceuticals The food you eat is the fuel that powers your body/mind. High quality food in the quantities that your body needs gives your cells the fuel they require for optimal performance. Imagine trying to drive your car using very low octane gas that has all sorts of extra chemicals in it that your car can't use. Your car wouldn't last very long. The same thing happens in your body. Cells given the wrong fuel over a long period of time will break down and can't reproduce properly. You can actually define your state of health with the nutrition choices you make. There are three things to consider when evaluating your fuel. 1. Your
food choices. What we recommend is known as a low glycemic diet, which is one that eliminates foods that are full of easy-to-digest carbohydrates or refined sugar products. A glycemic index has been developed that indicates how quickly specific foods affect blood sugar. Refined sugar has the most rapid effect and has an index number of 100. Broccoli, on the other hand, is 30 and chicken is 25. We recommend that you choose foods in the low to moderate range and eliminate all refined carbohydrates, such as white flour, pastries, and "junk foods." So, what we recommend is a high protein, low fat, high fiber, moderate complex carbohydrate (vegetables) eating plan. 2. How
much food you choose to eat. There is a theory that is prevalent in anti-aging circles that eating fewer calories than you need, combined with excellent nutrition, leads to fewer cellular reactions that stimulate aging. We have done a lot of research in this area and have seen that a daily intake of 1200 to 1500 calories a day, along with specific nutritional supplements that allow for balanced nutrition, immune system stimulation and antioxidation, which we will explain in a moment, will contribute to a longer, healthier life. 3. The
supplements you use. Gobble
Up Those Free-Radicals! Antioxidants neutralize free radicals, which is why they are considered so powerful in the anti-aging arsenal. Antioxidants that you are probably familiar with include Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Co-Q 10. In the work we do, a variety of antioxidants are combined, each of which has a different effect on cells. Some Suggestions
for You Do: 1. Eat fresh, whole foods including: Don'ts:
(and this is the ESSENCE of the low Glycemic Diet) 1. Eliminate bread, pasta, potatoes, deserts, canned drinks and sugar. Be easy on yourself as you make lifestyle changes, and don't try to do everything at once. Set a goal and, each day, take small steps towards that goal, knowing that you'll be giving yourself the gift of a longer healthy life. In our next issue, we will discuss Exercise How Much and What Kind You Need. THE

TIPS 1. Scientific studies have shown that as little as two minutes of direct sun exposure triggers protein that breaks down collagen and elastin (the skin's major structural support system). So, continuous, year round sun protection is key. 2. Choosing a broad spectrum sunscreen protecting against UVA (aging rays) as well as the known UVB (burning rays) is imperative, as well. 3. Apply sunscreen 20-30 minutes before going out in the sun and make sure it's at least a 15 SPF. 4. Apply sunscreen even on cloudy days and when driving your car. Even though the skin is exposed to fewer UVB rays on cloudy days, the UVA rays can penetrate the clouds and the windows of your car and burn you severely. 5. Avoid reflective surfaces like snow, water, and glass which can reflect up to 85% of the sun's damaging rays. 6. Minimize direct prolonged sun exposure by avoiding sun exposure during peak hours of 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. 7. Because most sun damage occurs before the age of 18, be sure to apply sunscreens to children starting at 6 months of age. 8. Water resistant products only remain on wet skin for 40 minutes while waterproof sunscreens stay on for 80 minutes while in the water. 9. Wear sunglasses, a hat, and loose fitting, light-colored, tightly-woven cotton clothing while in the sun. 10. If you want healthy skin, avoid sunbathing and use a self-tanner. My favorites are Biomedic Self Tan and St. Tropez Auto Bronzant. The following are some of my favorite recommendations and personal favorite sun protectors: I personally love Dermalogica's Solar Defense Booster SPF30, because I can add it to any moisturizer and foundation. It's so easy! Speaking of Dermalogica, I want to mention that Dermalogica's Ultra Sensitive Faceblock SPF25 was voted the best sunscreen by the editors of the March issue of "In Style" Magazine. When my husband and I go on our boat for the day, we love to use Dermalogica's Waterproof Solar Spray SPF25 and Dermalogica's Sun Swipes SPF15, both are easy to apply! Here, in New Mexico some days in the summer months can get up to a 10 UV index and we never get sunburned. Another product that we keep on the boat is Skinceuticals UV Defense Sport 45 with Zinc Cote. Some of my clients that play golf nearly everyday have had great results with LyphaZome Moisturizing Sunscreen SPF30, which is sweat-proof and rub-proof. Sensitive
skinned clients have raved to me about Coats
Aloe Sunscreen SPF30. It's even safe for babies! Clients that
have problem breakouts have done well with Coresa
Sun Screen SPF15, and clients undergoing glycolic, chemical
or laser peels have loved M.D.
Forte Environmental Protection SPF30. April GreatSkin® Specials Are you planning on having facial surgery? We have put together two excellent kits for our Pre and Postop clients. Read about both of these programs -- plus the protocols that Dr. Van Wormer uses to prevent scarring, bleeding and swelling when he does laser resurfacing.
