ANTI-AGING SERIES – PART 3
By Mark Van Wormer, MD, ABAAM

Water & Sleep – Great Anti-Aging Tools!

Two tools in the anti-aging toolbox that offer great advantages are water and sleep, although they don't get much attention. We deal with these everyday, but not necessarily in amounts from which we can derive anti-aging benefits. Let's look at each of these important elements separately.

The Importance of Water
Adult bodies are about 70% water, and every cell needs adequate water on a daily basis. Water is essential for almost all body functions, including digestion, absorption, circulation, excretion, transporting nutrients, building tissue, and maintaining body temperature.

If you don't provide your body with enough high quality water, you actually create a drought condition within your cells that can lead to health problems including gastrointestinal upset, constipation, higher cholesterol levels, skin problems and other conditions.

One sign of dehydration, or inadequate water, is skin that does not snap right back when pulled. Try it. If you lift your skin and it moves slowly back to its original position, you know you need more water.

How much water do you need? About 8 to 10 glasses a day. Some experts suggest using your body weight as a guide; divide your weight in half and that's the number of ounces you should drink each day. Since water is not stored for future use, you need to be concerned about your intake on a daily basis.

Does the quality of the water you drink matter? Yes, although this is a controversial subject.

"Safe" levels of contaminants have been determined by the Environmental Protection Agency. This means that chlorine, arsenic and other heavy metals, plus insecticides and other substances can exist in your tap water and still be considered safe – by EPA standards.

However, many scientists now believe that many of the substances in quantities allowed by the EPA are harmful to your health. In addition, it has been found that many municipal water systems only meet EPA standards on a sporadic basis. On some days, levels considered safe are exceeded.

Water can be filtered by a number of means. The safest commercially available water is prepared by reverse osmosis or distilled water. Because so much is removed from distilled water, some experts suggest that important minerals can be leached out of the body when this is consumed.

Filtered water is best when it is not stored in common plastic containers, specifically those with any number under 6 in the recycling triangle on the bottom of the bottle. Water is a great solvent, and will dissolve soft plastic bottles. The lower the number, the more soluble the plastic. So the water you get in cloudy plastic bottles at the market, which is 1, is probably contaminated with plastic. The number 7 on the bottom of a storage container is the safest. These bottles are available at sporting goods or health food stores.

There are a number of home filtration systems that can eliminate many of the harmful toxins from water and create an alkaline environment (PH 7.0 or above), which is best for the body.

To help raise the PH of your water and to improve its quality, I suggest Coral Calcium Gold®. Human bodies function much better in an alkaline pH. (7.4) Many chronic illness and bodily imbalances leave the body reality acidotic. Coral Calcium Gold® is an alkalinizer. The entire water table in Okinawa is filtered through coral calcium, and the life expectancy on this island is far higher than most places. It is specifically due to the water supply. Many chronic illnesses will disappear with the use of Coral Calcium Gold®.

For creating the most powerful antioxidant drink available, I also recommend, Mychrohydrin, in the form of Crystal Energy®, liquefied. This substance is derived from Silica. It forms an electrically active complex with water resulting in a powerful electron scavenger. One glass of activated microhydrin water (Crystal Energy®) has the oxidation-reduction potential (antioxidant capacity) of 3000 glasses of fresh squeezed orange juice!

Thus, one of my most powerful secrets to longevity and fitness is mixing 18 packets of Coral Calcium Gold® with 5 gallons of distilled water, followed by three tablespoons of Crystal Energy® to activate the water to a powerful antioxidant. This drink is what I make coffee, tea, juice and cook with. It has amazing properties. I simply rent a home 5-gallon dispenser/cooler bottle and drink it cold from the cooler!

Sleep
It's a fact that 40% of Americans do not get enough sleep. Because of this, lives are put in danger and health is compromised. It has been estimated that over 50% of automobile accidents are related to drowsiness. Lack of sleep affects job performance and the ability to think clearly.

The long-term effects of sleep deprivation can be devastating. When you sleep, your body is meant to repair itself and get back into balance. Toxins are supposed to be removed and immune system cells activated. With chronic sleep deprivation, these activities are reduced, which leads to many physical and emotional problems, including premature aging.

Two important chemicals related to sleep are melatonin and seratonin. As you approach bedtime, melatonin levels increase, and this signals the body to perform specific nighttime functions. Cortisol, a major anti-inflammatory hormone that prevents repair from taking place during the day, is suppressed, insulin production declines and levels of natural growth hormone increase.

Melatonin is synthesized from the brain hormone, or neurotransmitter, serotonin, which is made primarily from tryptophan, an amino acid that regulates many body functions, including moods, and sleep. Diets low in tryptophan can lead to low levels of brain serotonin, which causes depression and lack of sleep. Tryptophan is found in the greatest quantities in eggs, meat, poultry and beans.

Melatonin is available as a nutritional supplement and many people find that it helps them fall asleep. Greatskin carries the highest grade of pharmaceutical melatonin . Tryptophan is available from some compounding pharmacies, but generally not found in health food stores due to a contaminated batch some years ago arising in Japan. The FDA banned the substance for sale in health food stores. There is absolutely nothing wrong with taking l-tryptophan, which is a natural antidepressant and precursor to serotonin and melatonin.

Melatonin also has been implicated in the prevention of breast cancer. In fact, one hypothesis suggests that breast cancer may result from low melatonin levels. Our chromosomes even have melatonin receptors on them! Melatonin is a very power natural antioxidant hormone produced in the human pineal gland.

This gland, which lies deep in the center of the brain, atrophies with age. As melatonin levels diminish after the age of 10, our sleep habits also diminish, thus aging sets in. During phase 4 deep delta sleep, human growth hormone, a powerful anti-aging and immune stimulating substance is released. The more phase 4 delta sleep one gets, the less one ages!

How much sleep do you need? The general rule is seven to eight hours every night. Some people need less, others more. If you always use an alarm clock to wake yourself up, you probably are not getting enough sleep.

How can you tell if you are not getting enough sleep? Obviously, if you don't feel rested in the morning, you are not getting enough quality sleep. If you feel drowsy during the day, you probably need more sleep.

A lot of people opt to take sleeping pills in order to deal with sleep problems. This is a lot easier than dealing with the real causes of sleep deprivation, such as stress and poor nutrition. However, if you don't deal with the basic causes of sleep problems, you can be contributing to premature aging because you are compromising your body's immune system.

Getting enough sleep may mean that you have to evaluate your lifestyle and make some changes. When people are busy and crowd their schedules with activities, sleep is the one activity that often gets put aside. If you are serious about living a long and healthy life, it is imperative that you do what is necessary to get enough sleep.

If you have trouble sleeping, make sure that your room is dark enough, your bed is comfortable and that you can be relatively free from external noises and distractions.

If you are under a lot of stress and find it difficult to turn off your mind, consider learning to meditate or do some form of self-relaxation or self-hypnosis. Before you go to sleep, take a warm bath and drink some relaxing herb tea, such as camomile, valarian root, hops or skullcap, or a combination of these. Do some deep breathing exercises to help you relax.

So, our lesson for this month is the drink lots of high quality water and let yourself experience the luxury of deep, restful sleep. You will live a lot longer.

Next month we are going to talk about hormone replacement therapy and how it can retard aging.
