FEED YOUR SKIN!
By Mark Van Wormer, MD, ABAAM

Over the past few months, we've looked at many factors that contribute to aging and have made suggestions for retarding the aging process. In the first part of our anti-aging series, we talked about nutrition and nutraceuticals.

This month, we'll look at ways that you can specifically feed your skin, both internally and externally, to keep it looking young and to reverse the damages caused by both aging and your environment.

In Lori's article below, you'll find information for overcoming the damage caused by the summer sun. Once again, you'll see the words "free radicals" and "antioxidants." As we have said, much of anti-aging medicine revolves around stopping the damage caused by free radicals.

You have more control over the condition of your skin than you may realize. A "healthy glow" is just that -- a reflection of internal health that comes through the skin. Unfortunately, it's pretty hard for you to generate a healthy glow if you don't give your body the nutrients it needs to maintain optimal health.

It's your choice. The greasy burger or a fresh salad with a tasty dressing, a sugary cake or a fresh fruit mixture for desert.

We know that it takes a lot of self-discipline to make healthy choices. Every day, you are bombarded with messages that tell you to eat something other than fresh, whole, healthy foods. It's so much easier to munch on potato chips or a candy bar than to prepare a snack that's loaded with natural vitamins and minerals.

But, it's your choice. A tasty morsel that lasts for a few moments, or skin that gives you self-confidence and literally allows you to put your best face forward. The rewards are enormous when you make the healthy choice.

I'm going to suggest that you start the new season with a resolution to gradually, and I emphasize gradually, begin to eat healthier foods. If you try to do too much at once, you'll never stick with it.

Start by reading the labels on the foods you eat now. If you can't pronounce an ingredient, don't eat it!

You might want to keep a record of how many grams of sugar you consume in a day. Add up the sugar grams listed on the labels of your food. Keep in mind that 28.4 grams is one ounce or two tablespoons. Many people find that once they realize how much sugar they are eating they automatically cut back.

Processed sugar robs your cells of needed nutrients. This leads to premature aging. It may be difficult to think in terms of ten years from now, but each time you eat another candy bar or piece of cake, think about the wrinkles that so-called treat can cause. (It also can lead to diseases of aging including diabetes and heart disease - not a pretty picture.)

If you aren't taking vitamins now, start with just one multi-vitamin/mineral supplement. The added nutrients the supplement provides will make a big difference for you skin and energy levels. Once you feel the difference the supplement makes, you can add a new one for extra umph.

A good starter supplement is Essential Nutrients. It's loaded with vitamins and minerals all in one formula.

I also suggest that you try some of the products in our September Special listed below. They all will feed your skin nutrients it needs.

When shopping for skin care products, look for natural ingredients that can feed your skin. For example Our GreatSkin Natural Seaweed Cleanser is loaded with natural minerals.

Recently, a patient, Susan L, came to see me who was really excited. She had finally decided that looking and feeling good were more important than eating junk foods. For three months, Susan had done a good job of making healthy food choices and taking some basic supplements. She allowed herself some occasional "slips," but for the most part, followed a healthy eating plan. Susan's excitement came from the results she was seeing in both how her skin looked and how she felt. She told me that it really was worth the effort.

I hope you're ready to start giving your skin the nourishment it needs. Enjoy!

Fighting Skin Damage From Summer Sun

Summer is the time for, sun, fun, and vacation. But, it is also a time when your skin suffers the most damaging effects of the outdoors, especially from sun, heat, wind, and chlorine. With autumn approaching, there's a good chance that you've been left with fond memories of summer along with dehydrated photo -damaged skin.

For Softer, Smoother, Healthier Skin . . .

When skin absorbs sunlight, free radicals are formed that lead to collagen and elastin breakdown. This causes wrinkles, age spots and sagging skin.

The most powerful tool that you can use to reverse the damage caused by the sun is antioxidants, which fight free radicals. The most effective antioxidants are Vitamins B, E and C taken both internally and applied topically to the skin.

skin care products containing Alpha Hydroxy Acids and Vitamin A will help combat premature aging. The regular use of effective lightening products will help to minimize existing age spots and prevent the appearance of new ones.

Heat and wind accelerate dehydration by causing water to evaporate from the skin. Pool water is no friend to your skin either -- chlorine intensifies moisture loss because as it evaporates it draws moisture from your skin.

We suggest using moisturizers with antioxidants to stimulate the skin's natural defense system against further dehydration. Moisturizers containing vitamins B, C, and E along with humectants (which draw water into the skin) and lipids (which stimulate collagen production and help hold water in the cells) are recommended. Ideally, moisturizers will also contain emollients and silicones to seal in moisture and protect the skin.

Finally, don't forget to drink lots of water. The rule of thumb for water consumption is half of your body weight in ounces of water per day.
