KISSABLE LIPS FOR VALENTINE'S DAY
    By Lori Van Wormer, L.E.

February brings one of the most romantic days of the year ----- Valentine's Day. However, February can also bring harsh cold weather that can cause dry, flaky skin and chapped cracked lips. So, what's a girl to do to keep her lips baby soft and smooth for all of those Valentine's kisses? You may want to heed with the following:

Avoid licking your lips. As saliva evaporates, it draws water from the lips making them extremely dehydrated and dry.

When outdoors, always use a lip balm with an SPF of at least 15 to protect delicate lips against not only sunburn but also the fever blisters that can be activated by too much sunlight.

Look for Vitamin E as an ingredient in your lip balm.

Now that we have determined how to have soft and smooth lips, what about examining how to have sexy and inviting lips? Have you ever heard of the old adage, "A lady isn't totally dressed without her lipstick "? My mother wouldn't even go out to the mailbox without it. A dear friend's mother was on her death bed surrounded by her family when her last words were, "Please hand me my lipstick and help me put it on" Then, she smiled, closed her eyes and died. During the Big Depression women would often give up buying food over buying lipstick. All proof of how important lipstick is to us. According to a recent study, 79% of all American women wear lip color. The following are tips for beautiful kissable lips:

Lips can be overpowered by mistakes made in other areas of the face. Since we want the focus on the lips, go neutral on foundation, blush and eyes. Also, be sure your eyebrows (which frame the face) are neatly tweezed and touched up with a "brow fix".

Lipstick adheres best to a smooth surface. Before applying any color, gently exfoliate lips (when they are dry) with a damp cotton pad, washcloth, or toothbrush. Follow up with a smear of lip balm, then, pat off excess moisture with a tissue.

Prevent the lipstick from, slipping, sliding, smudging, or "bleeding" by applying foundation. This sets the base for the lipstick application. Next, lines your lips along the natural lip line with a lip pencil one shade darker than your lipstick. Then, choose a matte or long lasting lipstick.

Apply one coat, then, place a one-ply tissue over your lips with a puff. Dab the tissue on the lips with translucent loose powder to set the color. Remove the tissue, and add one more swipe of color.

For a final finished look, add a one, two "power punch" of clear lip gloss in the middle of the lower lip to give a sexy, "pouty" look----very inviting for all of those Valentine kisses!!!

THE SMILE
By Mark E Van Wormer, MD

Have you ever noticed someone who is listening to you speak, staring at your mouth as is moves? It is because the mouth and lips are the most expressive portion of the face. One can Botox® the forehead, frown lines, and crow's feet, essentially paralyzing the upper face, and still the mouth and periocular area dominates, allowing one to still be full of life and expression.

What therapeutic techniques are available for improving the perioral (area around the mouth) region and lips?

The aging face displays several problems, which need to be corrected to return to youthfulness. As our faces age several things happen. First, prolonged gravity and loss of facial elasticity and collagen support results in "drop" of the cheeks, causing the nasolabial fold (marionette lines) to be deeper and more prominent. Gravity displaces the high cheek tissue to a lower level, resulting in "jowls." So, not only does one get deeper nasolabial folds, but also jowls. This downward migration of normal "cheek" tissue results in deeper oral commisures (those lines next to the side of the mouth that pull it down into a frown position). When the oral commisures get too deep, one carries what looks like a constant frown.

In addition to cheeks sagging, jowls forming, deepening of the nasolabial fold and oral commissures, with age, one also looses lip substance. The full, luscious lips of youth actually shrink, atrophy, thin and waste away.

Not a pretty picture, the aging mouth area. Not to mention the vertical lip lines above the lip, which result in "lipstick bleed." Or the deep lines in the chin, or those layers of "laugh lines" next to the mouth from years of facial expression. What office or surgical procedures are available today to help these problems?

First, if the "facial droop" is substantial and the jowls are quite large, mid and lower face lifting may be one's only salvage. This surgical technique is performed under full anesthesia. The face is actually lifted from the bony calvarim (skull) and reshaped to fit by removing redundant tissue and reattaching it to the skull. This is, of course, the most extreme approach, but also the most effective for those who need it.

For improvement of lesser degrees of the aging perioral area, there are many wonderful office based techniques with little or no down time.

First, the nasolabial folds can be lifted through the subcutaneous (under the skin) and intracutaneous (in the skin) application of tissue fillers like collagen (bovine or human) or hyaluronic acid (not yet approved in the US as a tissue filler). The oral commissures, like wise can be lifted by application of collagen. The corners of the drooping mouth can be raised by the correct application of Botox® to muscles of facial expression which cause the mouth to turn downward. The lips can be augmented (made larger and more beautiful) with the application of collagen both in the lip liner area and to the fleshy portion of the lip as well. One must be aware that reapplication of tissue fillers every three to four months results in the most optimal results.

The vertical lip lines can be treated with a series of painless, non-irritating "cold laser" treatments designed to increase collagen in the dermis. Specifically, through a series of Aramis 1540 office based, now down time, laser treatments; the entire mouth unit can be treated, reducing lines and restoring collagen in the dermis. The Aramis laser results can be augmented by concomitant use of microdermabrasion and tretinoin (Retin A®).

For deeper lines, Carbon Dioxide laser resurfacing may be required for the best result. Carbon Dioxide perioral resurfacing works quite well for fine lines, vertical bleed lines and chin lines but requires about one week of time out of the public to heal the thermal injury which results in collagen growth stimulation. I prefer to perform full face resurfacing, rather than just one anatomic unit. Why? Because as the full face is healing, the final skin tone result is uniform, and the entire unit tends to "shrink" about 15%, yielding a mini-face-lift as well as wrinkle reduction.

The "Scalpel-less Face Lift" is really the use of Botox®, Collagen, Microdermabrasion, Aramis 1549 Cold Laser, and skin care to improve on the aging face through a minimally invasive, no down time approach which most patients welcome, as opposed to reconstructive Plastic Surgery.
