WHAT IS ROSACEA?
    By Lori Van Wormer, L.E.

Rosacea is a disease of vassal instability characterized by the following: redness on the cheeks, nose, chin, or forehead; small visible blood vessels on the face; bumps or pimples on the face, and watery or irritated eyes. It affects more than 14 million Americans mostly between the ages of 30 and 50. Less than 10% of Rosacea sufferers are being treated for the condition, so if you have the aforementioned symptoms, please see a skin care medical professional for therapy, as these symptoms will only worsen with time.

Although the underlying cause of Rosacea is unknown, studies have established that the condition can be successfully controlled and its symptoms reversed with long-term therapy and appropriate life style changes to avoid trigger factors. The number one defense strategy is protecting your face from the sun. Most people who suffer from Rosacea admit to having been sunbathers when they were younger. Another culprit may be the Demodex mite. Glycolic acid can be effective because it prevents the mite from colonizing in the follicle, which it likes to do.

Triggers that bring on flare-ups vary from sunlight to alcohol, spicy foods, hot beverages, stress, exercise, hot baths, wind, harsh skin care products and extremes of hot and cold. It is also important to seek a physician's diagnosis because Rosacea can resemble Acne and many Acne treatments tend to be vasodilators and will only aggravate Rosacea further. Once your doctor diagnoses the condition, he or she will probably recommend a topical anti-bacterial or anti-inflammatory medication such as Metrogel or Nortrate. Antibiotics sometimes also help. Intense Pulse Light can also offer results and can literally put the condition in remission. We recommend daily calming, soothing skin care products, along with Vitamin C Serum for at home care.

ROSACEA - WHAT CAN HELP
By Mark E Van Wormer, MD

Rosacea is a common skin condition that can vary from a simple tendency to flush or blush to severe disfiguration. Women are more affected than men (3:1) and fair-skinned people are more prone to Rosacea than those with dark skin. However, Rosacea tends to run a milder course in women, with men developing more disfiguring aspects.

Characterized by redness of the face, particularly on the nose and cheeks, there can be a variation from mild coloration to dark red Acne-type eruptions and dilated blood vessels. One of the more disfiguring aspects of Rosacea is rhinophyma - a red bulbous nose.

The cause of Rosacea is unknown, although the condition can arise suddenly after an environmenal or chemical impact. It can also develop slowly over a period of many years. Common to all cases of Rosacea is that solar irradiation makes it flare and makes it more difficult to treat.

Other environmental factors such as heat, humidity, cold and dryness may irritate the skin, as may fragrances, detergents, and many skin care product ingredients. Some patients are also affected by certain foods, such as hot liquids, spices and alcoholic beverages. Emotional reactions can also stimulate flushing.
