Good Nutrition Inside and Out

By Lori Van Wormer, L.E.

Lori’s Beauty Tip of the Month

“Anti-oxidation protection is one of the most important things that you can do for yourself.” In this day and age with ozone depletion, environmental pollutants, and poor dietary habits, I say, “always protect yourself with anti-oxidants”

Did you know that of the 2.2 million Americans who die each year, 1.8 million die from causes that can be linked to their diets? Making sure that you eat in a balanced nutritious way along with consuming the necessary dietary supplements could save your life.

By the same token, a good balanced diet of Vitamins A, B, C, and E topically applied and orally ingested can save your skin from premature aging and cellular damage caused by too much sun exposure, environmental pollutants, smoking and stress.

The following paragraphs describe how vitamins orally ingested along with vitamins topically applied to the skin can help with the anti-aging process.

Vitamin A
Topically applied (found in Retinol and Tretenoin creams) improves skin elasticity, increases moisture content, strengthens connective tissue, and helps reverse the signs of photo-aging by scavenging the free radicals which are directly linked to cell damage.
Orally ingested (found in the most brightly colored vegetables) prevents deterioration of eyesight, promotes healthy hair, teeth, and gums. Helps to prevent cancer formation and protects against free radical damage.

Vitamin B
Topically applied encourages cell regeneration, stimulates healing process, conditions the skin while helping with scarring.
Orally ingested B complex (found in wheat germ, meat, and vegetables) helps counteract stress related nutrient deficits, and protects the nervous system.

Vitamin C
Topically applied (found in Ester C Serums and L Ascorbic Acid Serums) stimulates collagen production, controls the production of hyper-pigmentation, strengthens capillary walls, scavenges free radicals and boosts the skin’s immune system.
Orally ingested (found in Broccoli, lemons, kiwi, strawberries and oranges) helps to combat varicose veins, strengthens blood vessels, reduces propensity to bruising, assists in healing process, boosts immune system, and scavenges free radicals.

Vitamin E
Topically applied is an anti-inflammatory, relieves skin dryness, promotes skin healing, protects skin cells and membranes, and slows collagen degradation.
Orally ingested (found in sunflower seeds, sesame seeds and tuna) stabilizes vascular system while helping to reduce the risk of heart attack. Also, scavenges free radicals.

Keeping Your Mind Young: Part I

By GreatSkin.com, MD

Dr. Mark says:

“Dr. Mark says: In this world filled with toxins, pollutants and over stimulation, one must protect one’s entire body/mind/skin with many powerful bioavailable antioxidants as well as enhancing learning and the mind with nootropics. I have selected many of my favorite antioxidants for my patients on GreatSkin®.com

We repeatedly cover the importance of external and internal physical rejuvenation using topically applied skin care products in the form of cosmeceuticals and antioxidants, as well as orally absorbed antioxidants for free radical scavenging.

We are essentially treating the hypothesis that aging occurs due to oxidation and free radical damage. But is youth and longevity worth anything at all without a focused, fresh, supple, critical mind with which to enjoy these benefits? Of course not; the key to all successful life is mental health.

In this little series of articles I will be discussing some of the steps one can take for optimal mental health.

I really think the main thing wrong with our society today has to do with lack of focus and attention. The cause can be linked to many things including our instant gratification lifestyle, but I really believe it is a subtle change through the years in our neurophysiology, which has lead to this “instant gratification lifestyle.” I honestly feel that many of us are raised with attention deficit disorder, but we don’t even know it. I believe there are also sub-clinical forms of attention deficit disorder that are less than disabling but still result in mild incapacity to learn, focus, concentrate and grow.

All forms of attention deficit disorder are linked to basic abnormalities in neurochemistry, in other words, there is a well defined, chemical alteration in brain function which might be corrected to enhance focus, concentration, calm and attention span. Look at the world today. It is built on tension, fast food, video games and poor achievement motivation, what I call the “slacker lifestyle.” We have too much negative stimulation (chemical, physical, emotional, social, etc) around us polluting our body/mind chemistry, thoughts and ability to focus on what is important and real.

Recent research by BioMarker Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (www.biomarkerinc.com) has revealed that balanced calorie deprivation can significantly prolong life by induction of multiple genes which control protein synthesis (including insulin) and carbohydrate metabolism. BioMSarker Pharmaceuticals has developed “gene chips,” which are devices that allow scientists to monitor gene expression (proteins synthesized) simultaneously in more than 12,000 different genes!

What is important here is that in calorie restricted individuals, certain genes are highly activated and others are deactivated. Scientists are able to produce a composite view of gene activity in groups of animals who demonstrate extreme longevity from calorie restriction or certain genetic mutations. We can then compare gene expression when various anti-aging products are administered and determine if there are compounds which mimic gene expression in longevity.

It turns out that one compound, metformin or Glucophage®, a commonly used diabetic agent to control elevated blood sugar, is highly active in producing the same gene expression profile as that found in balanced calorie restriction studies! This means that there is actually a “pill” that can prolong life: Metformin!

But how do calorie restriction, metformin and gene chips relate to mental acuity and clarity of thought? It has to do with glucose metabolism and the brain. Our society has developed a carbohydrate rich diet. The modern Western diet contains more that 50% of its calories from carbohydrates.

When fast acting carbohydrates enter the blood stream, serum Insulin levels rise dramatically, driving glucose, the one and only source of the brains energy into the body’s non CNS tissues, causing relative starvation of the brain for energy. Studies (1)(Spring, B. et al (1982/83) “Effects of Protein and Carbohydrate meals on Mood and Performance: Interactions with Sex and Age” J Psychiatric Res 17 155-67.) have clearly shown that, in subjects eating high carbohydrate diets, attention spans and learning were significantly diminished compared to those eating a protein rich, low carbohydrate diet.

The simplest method of enhancing focus and attention is to adopt a high protein, low simple carbohydrate diet. This would include giving up all sugar, white flour, bread, pasta, soft drinks, and dessert foods. Instead, obtain carbs from nuts, seeds, beans and peas. Drop serum insulin levels and, believe it or not, increase usable cerebral glucose for concentration and clarity!

One very simple way to enhance brain performance is to eat a low carbohydrate diet coupled with B vitamins, alpha-lipoic acid and CoQ-10 or its improved analog Idebenone. These substances are all major cerebral antioxidants and increase brain mitochondrial energy production, while stopping oxidation damage to neurons.

In my next newsletter I will be covering many of the available “nootropic medications,” for enhanced concentration, attention, memory and learning.
