The Importance of Proper Facial Cleansing

By Lori Van Wormer, L.E.

Lori’s Beauty Tip of the Month

“Men who suffer from folliculitis (shaving induced bumps that can become infected and resemble acne) should apply their shaving gel with a brush which lifts hair off the skin's surface and eliminates ingrowns. Also, they should use a mechanical scrub three times a week.”

Thorough cleansing is the most important critical step in our everyday skin care regimen, however so many people are cleansing incorrectly they may be doing more harm than good. The following are a few pointers to incorporate:

  • Always remove makeup before going to bed. Makeup left on overnight is one of the leading causes of clogged pores, leading to the formation of blackheads and breakouts.
  • After removing makeup, cleanse twice — once for removing surface impurities and second for deep pore cleansing.
  • Never use soap, as it is too harsh and strips the PH balance and the skin's natural moisture barrier. Instead, use a soap-free and acid-balanced cleanser. If you are used to using soap and like the lathering effect, look for a foaming, lathering cleanser.
  • Cleanse with tepid water. Water that is either too hot or too cold can cause irritation, dehydration, and potential increase in breakouts.
  • One to three times a week, use a mechanical scrub exfoliant followed by a deep pore-refining mask to add to deep pore cleansing.
  • After cleansing, spritz with a non-astringent toner to re-establish the PH balance and add hydration.

A New Treatment at GreatSkin® Clinics

By GreatSkin.com, MD
Director, GreatSkin® Med-Surge Spas of the Southwest

Dr. Mark says:

“If you do nothing else, protect your face from the sun, don't smoke and use many topical antioxidants on your face daily, including Serum C, and Red Tea extract, and our Scalpel-less™ Face-lifting Cream or Serum daily.”

GreatSkin® Medi-Spas of the Southwest is really excited to announce that the entire staff has become certified in delivering the FotoFacial-RF™ treatment. This exciting breakthrough combines Intense Pulsed Light therapy simultaneously with Radiofrequency energy. The combination of the two modalities, optical energy and electrical energy far exceeds what either can do alone.

The combination of IPL (intense pulsed light, which differs significantly from laser) and Radio frequency energy is only available through the Aurora Syneron® Device.GreatSkin has acquired three of these wonderful units for delivery of the FotoFacial-RF™ treatment, a highly evolved and proprietary skin renewal system. The benefits of a series of facial treatments are numerous. Pigmentation, redness, capillaries all vanish. The skin tightens and becomes thicker. The jowls retract. Lines and deep wrinkles smooth. All this is done without pain, and with no down time. I have been in cosmetic skin care for 12 years now, and I have never seen such marvelous results from a single device, especially without down time!

When approaching patients, we divide skin into three types, The "pink group," which encompasses fair skin, rosacea, capillary redness, sensitive "flushers and blushers," the "brown group," or patients with advanced pigmentation and photodamage, usually Fitzpatrick 3-4 (olive to dark skin), with acne scars, and sometimes oiliness and active acne, and finally the "wrinkled group," or those patients with really advanced photoaging, wrinkles, pigmentation, usually older with leathery skin and marked loss of collagen with sagging skin and jowls. Thus, the FotoFacial-RF™ really can target just about every skin type and problem, with fabulous results. You may read more information about this wonderful technique at fotofacialrf.com.

GreatSkin® has assembled a grouping of our own famous products for home treatment of each one of these skin types, a product line that is used by the patient while undergoing the FotoFacial-RF™ treatment series. We are offering these kits to the general public for a period of time at significant discount. These kits are all the BEST products that GreatSkin® has to offer to treat each one of these unique skin types.
