Issue #44 - Love is in the Air

Greta whirled around the ballroom at Le Grand bal des Parfumeurs à Paris in her new Vera Wang gown. She was in the arms of Mark James, the handsome perfumer from GreatSkin and now the prize winning perfumer for his two new fragrances, GreatScents for Her and GreatScents for Him. Yes, the exclusive Le Grand Parfumeurs Foundation had just awarded Mark with the Parfumeurs Medal of Distinction for creating these two deliciously original and completely mesmerizing fragrances.

And now, everyone was in a celebratory mood and feeling just a little bit giddy. In fact, as Mark held Greta close, and they danced to a Cole Porter tune, the photographers circled about, snapping pictures of the famous fashion pair. Well, such was the price of being with a prize winning perfumer, Greta mused as she gazed at Mark in his tuxedo. What an elegant man and so talented and hard working.

In fact, just earlier in the week, he had taken her on a tour of the institute where he had studied to become a perfumer. She was in the French Rivera for a modeling shoot with the GreatSkin crew, where she posed for the magazine in a sun-drenched field of wild flowers, wearing a bright blue Lily Pulitzer resort dress. The next day, she drove with Mark to Grasse, a beautiful village to the north of Cannes. He took her to the Grasse Institute of Perfumery, where he had been trained alongside the best "noses" in the business. The Institute was housed in a 20th century Provencal estate, painted gold and adorned with blue shutters. Even from outside the building, Greta could smell the intoxicating mélange of aromas, the floral scents of tuberose, jasmine and lavender, the citrus smell of lemongrass, the fresh woodsy notes and even the subtle hint of leather and musk. Mark opened the door for her, and Greta was amazed. Inside she saw serious-looking perfumers wearing crisp white lab coats, inspecting clear beakers of amber liquid. "Mark," she said turning to her handsome companion. "I had no idea!"

"Did you think that beautiful fragrances just happen?"

"Well, I had no idea it was so scientific!" she said.

"It's a science and an art," Mark whispered as he offered Greta a white rose petal. "Close your eyes and inhale," he told her. She closed her eyes and felt the petal tickling her nose.

"Now," he said, "Do you see how complex the fragrance is? You don't simply smell the blossom of the rose, but if you really concentrate you can smell the earth, the sunlight, even the bees that pollinate the flowers. You can smell the salty sea breezes. And if you concentrate, you can even smell the dreams of the person who harvested this flower."

Greta opened her eyes. Who was this mysterious man? This scientist and yes, this artist? She wasn't sure, really, but now she knew, there were many layers to him yet to be discovered. Yes, Mark James was complex
